This year, the arrival of spring aligns beautifully with two moments that remind us to pause and reconsider our habits: World Sleep Day in mid-March and Zero Waste Day at the end of the month. One celebrates the importance of rest and the other reminds us to care for the resources we use every day.
At Home of Wool, these two ideas meet naturally in the bedroom, the place where sleep, materials, and everyday rituals shape our wellbeing.
Spring has a way of changing the atmosphere inside a home almost overnight. Youโve experienced that feeling, haven’t you? The light lingers longer in the morning, windows open more easily, and fresh air begins to move through rooms that spent the winter closed and warm.
For many people this is the moment when small rituals of renewal begin. Closets are opened again, shelves are cleared, and spaces that felt comfortable all winter suddenly ask for a little more attention. Yet one place often remains untouched. And that is your bed.
Rositsa, founder of Home of Wool, often reflects on this when speaking about sleep and the materials we surround ourselves with at night:
โThe one that shapes how the body rests, restores itself, and prepares for the next day is the bed. We spend almost a third of our lives there, yet people rarely think about the environment they are sleeping in. In our atelier we see every day how natural materials like wool, linen, and silk influence the quality of rest. The bed is not just furniture. Itโs an environment.โ
In our atelier, this idea shapes the way we work every day. Our crafters handle wool, linen, and silk with care, filling pillows, stitching mattress covers, and assembling bedding. Every wool pillow, mattress, and blanket that leaves our workshop is carefully crafted by hand. When you work with these materials daily, you experience firsthand how they behave. How wool stays breathable and how natural fibers stay alive and keep you closer to nature.
And spring, with its instinct for renewal, is often the perfect moment to look at those layers of fibers again.
World Sleep Day invites us to ask a simple but powerful question: what actually helps us sleep well? Beyond routines and schedules, the answer often lies much closer to the body. In the materials we rest on every night.
Why the Materials Around You at Night Matter
Sleep is when the body performs its quiet maintenance. During deep sleep cycles the brain processes memories, the immune system strengthens itself, and the nervous system finally slows after the rhythm of the day.
But good sleep depends on more than time. The environment around the body plays an important role as well.
Temperature is one of the most influential factors. As we begin to fall asleep, the body naturally lowers its internal temperature slightly. If bedding traps heat or humidity, the body must constantly adjust during the night.
This is where natural bedding makes a difference.
Materials like wool, linen, and silk allow the bed and your body to breathe. Wool absorbs moisture and gradually releases it into the air. Linen allows warmth to dissipate easily. Silk remains smooth and cool against the skin. When the bed can breathe, the body usually settles more easily into restful sleep.
As winter fades and spring approaches, this awareness often leads to another natural step: refreshing the bedroom itself. Not by replacing everything, but by letting the bed breathe again and adjusting the layers we sleep with.
A Simple Spring Ritual
Long before synthetic fabrics became common, people refreshed their bedding in simple ways when the seasons changed. Windows were opened wide, blankets were aired outdoors, and sunlight reached the textiles that had been used throughout the winter months.
Natural fibers still respond beautifully to this kind of care.
A wool duvet insert or wool comforter often regains its loft after several hours in fresh air. The fibers relax and expand again, restoring their natural insulation.
The same is true for a wool blanket or a wool pillow, both of which benefit from occasional airing. In our atelier we notice this often. Wool fibers regain their softness and resilience after exposure to fresh air and sunlight.
Even the layers beneath the body can be refreshed. A wool mattress topper helps improve airflow across the sleeping surface, while a wool mattress protector protects the mattress without blocking breathability. And both of these bedding pieces will love a sun-kissed spring ritual of renewal.
These habits are simple, but they help maintain a balanced and comfortable sleep environment.
Choosing the Right Layers for Better Sleep
A comfortable bed is not only one product. It is a system of layers that work together to support the body throughout the night. When each layer is breathable and natural, the entire sleep environment becomes calmer and more balanced.
Pillows According to Your Sleep Position
The right pillow keeps the head and neck aligned with the spine. Side sleepers usually need a slightly higher pillow for proper support, while back sleepers benefit from medium loft. Stomach sleepers often prefer a softer, lower profile.
A wool pillow makes this easier because the filling can be adjusted. You can add or remove wool until the pillow supports your preferred sleeping position.
Breathable Mattress Protection
A mattress protector is one of the simplest ways to extend the life of a mattress. Unlike synthetic protectors that trap heat, a wool mattress protector allows air to circulate while still protecting the mattress from everyday wear.
Comfort from a Wool Mattress Topper
If a mattress feels too firm or retains heat, a wool mattress topper can transform the sleeping surface. Wool adds gentle cushioning while remaining breathable, allowing moisture and excess heat to move away from the body.
Seasonal Comfort with a Lightweight Wool Duvet
As the weather becomes warmer, many people switch to a lighter duvet. A lightweight wool duvet insert provides insulation without overheating, maintaining a comfortable temperature throughout the night.
Breathable Bedding Set Fabrics
The fabrics closest to the skin complete the sleep environment. Linen bedding offers exceptional breathability and a relaxed texture that softens over time, while silk bedding feels cool and smooth against the skin and is especially loved for its gentle touch on hair and sensitive skin.
While spring invites us to refresh our homes, the end of March brings another moment of reflection. The Zero Waste Day. It reminds us not only to care for what we own, but also to consider how products are made.
Why We Chose a Zero-Waste Approach
Working with wool every day changes the way you think about materials.
In the textile industry enormous amounts of fabric are discarded each year. But when you work closely with natural fibers, seeing their durability and feeling their texture, it becomes difficult to treat them as disposable.
In our atelier we often had beautiful pieces of fabric left after cutting mattress covers or bedding. Too good to discard, yet not part of the standard pattern.
This observation eventually led to the creation of our Zero Waste Mission and its hero, the Zero Waste Wool Mattress.
Rositsa, founder of Home of Wool, explains the idea simply:
โWhen you work with natural fibers every day, you begin to understand how valuable they really are. We decided that we should not waste a single pound of precious fabrics or wool. If the material is good, we will always find a way to use it.โ
Our crafters began carefully stitching these remaining fabric panels together, creating mattress covers with clean parallel seams. Inside, layers of breathable wool allow air to circulate freely, creating a naturally balanced sleep surface.
Customers who value sustainability often mention this aspect first:
โThe fact that itโs eco-friendly and sustainably produced gives me so much peace of mind. Itโs a product I feel proud to own.โ

The Layers of a Comfortable Bed
A comfortable bed rarely comes from one single element. Instead, comfort usually emerges from several layers working together.
A wool pillow supports the head and neck while remaining adjustable, allowing sleepers to shape the filling for their preferred position.
Beneath the body, a wool mattress topper softens the mattress and improves airflow through the sleeping surface.
A wool mattress protector protects the mattress while still allowing the bed to breathe.
Above everything sits the duvet. A wool duvet or wool comforter regulates warmth naturally, holding warmth when the room cools and releasing excess heat when the body becomes too warm.
Finally, the fabrics closest to the skin complete the sleep environment. Many people love linen bedding for its breathability and relaxed texture, while others prefer silk bedding, which offers a smooth and cooling surface that is gentle on both skin and hair.
Together these layers create a bedding set that feels balanced rather than overheated.

A Bedroom Ready for Spring
Spring rarely requires dramatic changes in the home. Often the most meaningful reset begins with small adjustments. Like opening the windows, letting sunlight reach the bed again, and refreshing the bedding we use every night.
Natural bedding brings a quiet balance to the bedroom. Breathable wool layers, airy linen bedding, and the cool smoothness of silk bedding create an environment that feels lighter and calmer. And when the place where we sleep feels balanced and comfortable, rest tends to follow. Night after night.
