Natural and Non-Toxic Mattresses and Pillows

Cream mattress with stacked pillows, folded bedding and a bolster beside a tufted headboard.

Choosing a natural mattress or pillow starts with something personal: how you like your bed to feel. Perhaps you enjoy a firm, settled surface, want a pillow you can adjust or need a mattress that fits an unusual frame. Understanding the materials helps you turn those preferences into a comfortable choice.

We make wool bedding at Home of Wool, so we have a point of view. This guide brings together practical comfort advice, clear explanations of bedding labels and selected products from four wool-focused brands and retailers. If you’re drawn to breathable wool and made-to-measure sizing, you’ll also see where our bedding can fit into your home.

What natural and organic labels tell you

Natural describes a material’s origin, such as wool from sheep, cotton from plants or latex from rubber trees. The full composition tells you more about the bed you’ll actually use, including its cover, filling and any binders or adhesives. Natural materials can still undergo processing.

Organic has a more specific meaning when supported by certification. For wool and cotton textiles, GOTS labelling distinguishes “organic”, with at least 95% certified organic fibres, from “made with x% organic materials”, with 70–94%. GOTS also sets processing and social criteria; it does not mean that every permitted component or processing input is organic. GOLS is the relevant standard for organic latex.

Non-toxic expresses a common buying priority, but it isn’t a certification. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 tests certified textiles against limits for specified harmful substances; emissions standards such as GREENGUARD Gold address substances released into indoor air. A current certificate is most useful when its scope clearly identifies the filling, fabric or finished product it covers.

If “chemical-free” is what brought you here, more precise descriptions will help you choose. You may want wool without shrink-resist treatment, an unbleached cover or a mattress without synthetic foam or added adhesives. Those are specific preferences a product’s material information can answer. No material is literally free of chemical substances.

Natural mattress and pillow fillings compared

The feel matters as much as the label. Wool offers a more settled surface, latex brings bounce, and a loose pillow filling lets you shape the support around you. Here is how the main options differ.

Material image Materiaali Comfort and use Buying consideration
Generic material example: Wool. Photo: Bright Creations / GoSupps. Villa Support with gentle give and exceptional natural temperature and moisture regulation. Naturally renewable, with a fresh fleece grown each year. Settles with use. Allow for turning and airing; washing depends on the product.
Generic material example: Cotton bolls. Photo: Syngenta. Organic cotton Soft, breathable cushioning. Like wool, cotton can be used as filling in its natural fibre form, without needing chemical conversion, bleaching or synthetic binders. Cotton filling compresses. Thick filled items need thorough drying.
Generic material example: Natural latex foam sample. Photo: Vivere Zen. Natural latex Buoyant, elastic support for sleepers who enjoy bounce. Composition varies. GOLS is relevant when certified organic latex is a priority.
Generic material example: Loose horsehair filling. Photo: Peter Cook International. Horsehair Resilient filling in some luxury mattresses. Usually one component in a layered bed; consider the complete construction and price.
Generic material example: Coconut coir fibres. Photo: Livedale. Coconut coir A firm structural layer. Rubberised coir contains a latex binder, relevant if you want to avoid latex.
Generic material example: Cork sheet. Photo: CorkMart. Cork A firm component in selected mattress designs. Binders and attachment methods vary with the construction.
Generic material example: Kapok pod and fibres. Photo: Tsukuba Cotton. Kapok Light, soft plant filling for pillows. Available alone or blended with other fillings, including latex.
Generic material example: Loose down filling. Photo: Mühldorfer. Down and feathers Soft, light filling for pillows and duvets. Compare the down-to-feather proportions and animal-welfare sourcing.
Generic material example: Buckwheat hulls. Photo: J-Life International. Buckwheat hulls Firm pillow filling that moulds into shape. Has a granular feel and can rustle when you move.

Wool’s crimp helps its fibres flex, and the fibres can absorb and release moisture vapour. Woolmark explains the fibre’s structure; our wool care guide covers looking after finished bedding.

For other natural-looking labels, a little detail helps. Most soft “bamboo” fabric is rayon or viscose made from bamboo. For down, the Responsible Down Standard addresses animal welfare, including prohibitions on live plucking and force-feeding.

Four wool bedding brands and retailers compared

We selected Home of Wool, Woolroom, Shepherd’s Dream and Holy Lamb Organics to show different buying options: custom all-wool construction, a wool-and-spring mattress and US-made wool bedding. The comparison uses published product specifications and purchasing policies checked on 30 September 2026. It is a buying guide based on those sources; we have not carried out comparative sleep testing.

Home of Wool serves international buyers; the Woolroom trial terms below concern mainland UK customers. Holy Lamb Organics sells the Shepherd’s Dream mattress alongside its own bedding, so those two mattress entries describe the same construction through different sellers. Other models and destinations may have different terms.

Choosing between the four

Home of Wool

Home of Wool is particularly well suited to people who want a natural mattress without springs, foam, latex or glued layers of different filling materials. Our villapatja is filled entirely with wool and secured by hand tufting, making it an appealing choice for those who want to avoid adhesives and chemically modified filling materials. Our wool filling contains no added synthetic fibres or shrink-resist treatment.

You can tailor the mattress to both your space and your preferred feel, choosing your dimensions and a thickness of 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 inches. For a non-standard frame, made-to-measure sizing means you can work with the bed you already love. The choice of thickness also gives you more scope to find the support and cushioning that suit your body and sleeping habits.

The cover fabric is an equally important part of that choice. We offer 100% organic unbleached cotton, 100% OEKO-TEX-certified unbleached linen, and 100% OEKO-TEX-certified virgin wool fabric. This lets you choose the material surrounding your mattress filling according to your own preferences. Our fabrics are undyed and unbleached, with no added chemical finishes.

For couples with different comfort preferences, our Jaettu Villapatja offers two individually specified halves, allowing each partner to choose their preferred firmness. Optional connecting zippers bring the halves together. Where different thicknesses are selected, our team can advise on the bed base needed to keep the sleeping surfaces level.

The construction also supports long-term care. Mattress zippers give you access to inspect the filling and make local adjustments or add wool where needed. Our care and repair guidance explains how to repair a loosened tuft using the included mending kit. These practical details give you ways to maintain the mattress over time and address minor changes without replacing the whole product. You can also see our Sofia workshop, where each mattress is handmade to order.

Because each mattress is made to order, you can discuss the details directly with the people making it. Share your frame measurements, usual sleeping position and preferred feel, and our team can help you choose. Allow for production as well as delivery, and ask about priority production options if you have a particular date in mind.

Woolroom

Woolroom’s Standen suits shoppers who enjoy pocket-spring support with natural fibre comfort layers. Its Deluxe pillow offers adjustable filling and a machine-washable outer cover. The pillow page states OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 bedding certification and Allergy UK approval; those statements should be read separately from the mattress’s specifications. Qualifying mainland UK sleep trials may be useful if trying the bed at home is a priority.

Shepherd’s Dream

Shepherd’s Dream offers a US-made all-wool mattress that can be combined with a separate wool topper or latex base. This lets you consider the comfort of the whole setup, with each addition included in your budget. Its adjustable Wooly Down pillow has a hand-wash care option. The selected products use EcoWool; the pillow also specifies organic cotton. Its certifications page lists standards generally, so product-specific documents are needed for a certification comparison.

Holy Lamb Organics

Holy Lamb Organics lets you buy the Shepherd’s Dream mattress alongside its own bedding, including the Organic Wooly Down pillow. The pillow lists organic wool and cotton, while the mattress uses EcoWool. Its certification information explains its GOTS-certified facilities and material distinctions. The mattress listing gives an approximate 8–12-week production time and is final sale, making the delivery schedule and feel worth settling before ordering.

Returns and trials before you order

A clear return policy helps you choose with realistic expectations. A sleep trial allows use of an eligible product; an ordinary return window can require it to remain unused. These are the published change-of-mind terms. The sellers’ policies give the full conditions for your order and destination; defective-item claims and statutory rights are separate.

Comparing the cost of your complete bed

The useful price is the cost of the bed you intend to order. Start with the same dimensions in centimetres or inches, since “queen” and “king” vary between markets. Then compare your chosen thickness or spring tension, cover fabric and any additional layers. A lower starting price for a smaller mattress tells you little about the cost of your own setup.

For Home of Wool, select your dimensions, thickness and fabric in the mattress configurator. For Shepherd’s Dream or its Holy Lamb Organics listing, include any separate topper or latex base you plan to use. For Woolroom, include the required protector if you want the qualifying mattress trial. These choices belong in the same budget as the mattress.

Use one delivery destination for each quote, including delivery, applicable tax, customs charges and currency conversion where relevant. Keep return costs alongside the purchase total, so you know the cost of changing your mind too. Our delivery information explains the destination-specific details for Home of Wool.

Choosing your mattress thickness and pillow height

For a Home of Wool mattress, begin with the feel you enjoy. Our mattress selection guide describes the 3-inch option as firm and the 7-inch option as closer to medium-firm once settled. Your weight, sleeping position and base also influence the result. If you like a firm bed but want more cushioning at the surface, discussing thickness and a separate topper together can help you choose the right combination.

What settling looks like in practice. Our wool mattresses naturally compress by approximately 10–15% in thickness during the first few months of use. We account for this by filling them densely, so they arrive thicker than the listed size. Turning the mattress helps the wool settle evenly. This is a useful difference to understand when moving from foam or springs to a wool-filled bed.

For your pillow, start with the space between your head and mattress. Side sleepers often prefer more height; back sleepers may prefer less, while stomach sleepers often favour a low profile. A small 2016 laboratory study found that pillow height changed pressure distribution and modelled neck alignment; it did not establish one ideal height for everyone. With our säädettävä villatyyny, you can change the filling gradually instead of committing to one fixed height.

Try the pillow on the mattress you normally use. If it feels too high, unzip it and remove a small amount of wool, spread the remaining filling evenly, then zip it closed and try again. Keep the removed wool so you can add it back. Our thin wool pillow is another option if you prefer a lower starting profile.

Do you need a mattress or a topper?

If your current mattress still gives even support and you mainly want a different surface feel, a natural wool mattress topper can be a smaller first step. It adds a wool comfort layer to the bed you already own. A mattress with deep dips or structural wear needs attention to its underlying support; a topper cannot restore that support.

Caring for natural bedding

Washable protectors and covers make everyday care easier. For Home of Wool mattresses, flip and rotate weekly during the initial settling period and regularly thereafter. Our product care guide recommends wooden slats no more than 2 inches apart for support and airflow. Solid bases require more frequent airing of the underside.

Air pillows regularly, spot-clean as directed and let damp components dry thoroughly. Prolonged dampness can lead to mould, including in wool bedding. Follow the instructions for the particular product and fabric: as the pillow comparison shows, a washable outer cover does not mean the filled insert is machine-washable.

Frequently asked questions

What is the least toxic type of mattress?

No single material establishes that a mattress is the “least toxic”. Choose a construction with clearly disclosed components and relevant testing. If you want to avoid synthetic foam or added adhesives, a wool-filled construction may suit those preferences. Its comfort, cover and care routine still need to suit you.

Do natural mattresses contain flame retardants?

That depends on the construction. Wool can form part of a fire barrier, but fibre properties alone do not establish a finished mattress’s compliance. The seller should explain how the exact model supplied to your country meets the applicable rules and whether flame-retardant substances are added. US CPSC guidance explains mattress requirements; UK government guidance sets out the 2025 changes to furniture fire-safety rules.

Is natural latex a good alternative to wool?

It can be, particularly if you prefer a buoyant feel with more bounce. An all-wool mattress offers a more settled surface. For latex, the full formulation and any relevant GOLS or emissions certification help you understand the product beyond the word “natural”. Choose between them using both material preferences and the feel you enjoy.
