We all need a little bit of soft textured cushions and pillows at home to feel cozy and warm, don’t we? Looking around your house there are so many places that could become a lot more inviting when you add a cushion on top of them.

For more than 5 years we have specialized in creating all kinds of wool-filled all-natural cushions in various sizes and shapes.

In this post we are covering all the frequently asked questions our clients have had and some of the advice we have gathered through the experience of creating cushions for more than 5000 homes around the globe.

What makes Home of Wool cushions so special?

We have started our Home of Wool journey to promote a healthy and mindful environment at home. In the creation of all our pieces, we use naturally renewable raw materials such as wool, cotton, linen, and mulberry silk. Our products are as pure as possible and they are suitable for newborns, adults, and the elderly, for multiple chemical sensitivity sufferers, and for people with allergies.

Wool is the base that we use for all our creations. Our wool has not been bleached, carbonized, or dyed. It is as safe as it could be and it comes with a multitude of benefits not only for your health but for the planet as well. Wool is environmentally sustainable, biodegradable in soil and water, fire, mildew, and dust mite resistant. It is extremely durable and regulates body temperature like no other material.

The fabrics we use for your wool-filled creations are also all-natural and pure. All of them are either Oeko Tex or GOTS certified and they all come in their natural color. We have a great variety of cotton, wool, linen, silk, and cotton/linen blends that will add a classy and warm accent to any room.

One of the greatest features of our cushions is that they are made-to-order, created especially for each one of you. They are all customizable and we can create them to fit any space.

How to choose the fabric for my cushion?

All of our fabrics are 100% natural. All of them offer high moisture absorption and breathability and all of them are soft to the touch.

Linen Fabric

As a rule of thumb, the higher the linen percentage in a fabric, the more durable it is the easier it is for you to keep clean. Linen is highly dirt-repellent and resists stains like no other fabric. What is more, it is by far our most durable fabric, much stronger than cotton. Linen, together with wool fabric is one of our most durable fabrics.

Virgin Wool Fabric

Wool is also a very durable fabric and it is our most mildew-resistant fabric option. It is the best fabric in terms of regulating body temperature and moisture in all seasons, so it is a great option for daybed mattresses and cushions.

Cotton Fabric

Cotton is an extremely breathable fabric. Its light color and soft texture give every cushion a very light and airy design. Have in mind, however, that cotton is the slowest fabric to dry. It is our lightest fabric in color so dirt shows more on it.

At Home of Wool we offer a great variety of all-natural fabrics but we can also create a cushion using your own piece of textile.

How to wash a wool-filled cushion?

We offer two main design options for our cushions: tufted and non-tufted. Depending on the design you choose you can machine wash the cover of the cushion. Have in mind, however, that the wool filling itself should be protected from water.

Tufting is a beautiful decorative element that gives our cushions a classic look. However, it is much more than a design detail. It is the base of any wool filled item, it keeps the wool filling in place so that it doesn’t move around and make the cushion uneven when you use it.

Even the so-called non-tufted cushions have tufting. But the way they are constructed is by making the tufting through an insert cushion and then putting over a zip-off cover that hides the tufts. This makes the cover easily removable and machine washable.

For tufted cushions, we recommend you only spot clean them just like you would spot clean a sofa. However, if you really need to machine wash the cover you can still do that. You will need to snip the tufts, remove the wool filling, wash the cover, refill, and re-tuft the cushion. We always include a needle & thread kit with all the instructions in it and it is not as difficult as it sounds. In fact, it’s more or less like sewing buttons.

How to choose the thickness of my cushion?

The decision on the thickness is a matter of comfort, design idea, and visual preferences.

We advise wool-filled seating cushions to be no more than 5’’ thick. This ensures they hold up their shape better due to the high pressures from sitting, without sacrificing comfort. However, we do stuff our cushions generously with wool and they do come thicker than advertised and with use will compress to their advertised thickness.

2’’, 3’’, and 4’’ will work absolutely perfect for seating cushions, and 4’’ or 5’’ would be a great thickness for a daybed cushion.

When choosing the cushions for your dining area or kitchen, have in mind that most probably they will get dirty. So, either choose a 100% linen or a cotton/linen blend if you prefer a tufted design or a non-tufted design with a machine washable cover.
