No, no los usamos. Tenemos algo mejor. \u00a1Tenemos lana!<\/p>\n<p>Pero, \u00bfa qu\u00e9 viene tanto alboroto? \u00bfNo son buenos los retardantes de llama en caso de incendio? Lo son, pero tambi\u00e9n son extremadamente t\u00f3xicos. Por eso debemos plantearnos una alternativa segura y eficaz.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bfSab\u00eda que una de las mayores ventajas de la lana es su resistencia natural a las llamas? No se derrite como el nailon, el poli\u00e9ster o la espuma. La lana puede ralentizar la combusti\u00f3n de las llamas propagadas en ropa de cama, sof\u00e1s y todo tipo de mobiliario. Por eso es la mejor alternativa a los retardantes de llama.<\/p>\n<p>Algunas empresas de colchones utilizan una capa de lana en sus productos para cumplir la normativa legal. Otras utilizan un poco de lana por razones de marketing y muchos productos qu\u00edmicos para reducir los costes de fabricaci\u00f3n. Pero veamos c\u00f3mo empez\u00f3 todo.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00bfQu\u00e9 son los retardantes de llama y por qu\u00e9 est\u00e1n presentes en la mayor\u00eda de los colchones que se venden desde los a\u00f1os 70 hasta hoy en Estados Unidos?<\/h2>\n<p>Los retardantes de llama son compuestos qu\u00edmicos utilizados por la industria del mueble, el colch\u00f3n y la ropa de cama para cumplir la normativa de seguridad contra incendios. Sin embargo, se ha demostrado que la mayor\u00eda de los productos qu\u00edmicos utilizados en el proceso son t\u00f3xicos y peligrosos para la salud humana.<br \/>\nTodo empez\u00f3 en la \u00e9poca en que fumar era guay, glamuroso y barato. En los a\u00f1os 50 y 60, era socialmente aceptable fumar en casi todas partes. Incluso en la cama. Eso provoc\u00f3 muchos incendios y fue la causa de muchas lesiones y muertes.<\/p>\n<p>No es de extra\u00f1ar que los colchones se consideren la mayor fuente de combustible en el hogar. La espuma que se utiliza para crearlos es altamente inflamable y combustible.<\/p>\n<p>Hab\u00eda que eliminar los riesgos de incendio del dormitorio, pero sin meterse con los intereses de la industria tabaquera. Por eso, en los a\u00f1os 70 se present\u00f3 en el Registro Federal la Norma Federal de Inflamabilidad de Colchones, que entr\u00f3 en vigor. Seg\u00fan la norma, cada fabricante de colchones deb\u00eda garantizar que los colchones que la cumplieran pudieran resistir la ignici\u00f3n de cigarrillos y otras peque\u00f1as fuentes de calor. Fue entonces cuando los fabricantes de colchones empezaron a utilizar productos qu\u00edmicos ign\u00edfugos.<\/p>\n<p>A lo largo de los a\u00f1os, las investigaciones han demostrado que la mayor\u00eda de estas sustancias qu\u00edmicas ign\u00edfugas tienen efectos perjudiciales para la salud, especialmente para los ni\u00f1os y los reci\u00e9n nacidos.<\/p>\n<p>Casi 30 a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, en 2007, se public\u00f3 una nueva normativa. La mayor\u00eda de nosotros no lo hacemos, pero eso no significa que un colch\u00f3n cargado de retardantes de llama sea seguro. Con el tiempo, los retardantes de llama se van filtrando lentamente del material en el que se han a\u00f1adido, terminan en el polvo y se transportan por el aire.<\/p>\n<p>Todas y cada una de las noches que pasamos en la cama inhalamos compuestos peligrosos que, a la larga, causan graves da\u00f1os a nuestra salud. Como los reci\u00e9n nacidos y los beb\u00e9s pasan la mayor parte del tiempo en la cama, debemos ser extremadamente cautos y cuidadosos con la seguridad de sus camas y colchones y asegurarnos de que no contienen sustancias qu\u00edmicas t\u00f3xicas.<\/p>\n<p>Los estudios han revelado que aproximadamente el 90% de los estadounidenses tienen sustancias qu\u00edmicas ign\u00edfugas en su organismo. La lana requiere una temperatura m\u00e1s alta y mayores niveles de ox\u00edgeno para arder. Soldados, bomberos y polic\u00edas conf\u00edan en la lana desde hace siglos. Incluso los astronautas y los pilotos de F\u00f3rmula 1 llevan la lana junto a la piel, reduciendo as\u00ed los riesgos en caso de verse expuestos a las llamas, afirma la Organizaci\u00f3n Internacional de Textiles de Lana.<\/p>\n<p>Por eso muchas empresas utilizan lana en lugar de productos qu\u00edmicos, creando as\u00ed un producto no t\u00f3xico y cumpliendo al mismo tiempo las normas sobre riesgo de incendio. Por desgracia, muchas m\u00e1s prefieren utilizar los productos qu\u00edmicos ign\u00edfugos t\u00f3xicos, m\u00e1s c\u00f3modos y baratos.<\/p>\n<p>La ley no exige que los colchones de lana se roc\u00eden con productos qu\u00edmicos ign\u00edfugos adicionales.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00bfC\u00f3mo podemos protegernos de los efectos negativos de los retardantes de llama?<\/h2>\n<p>Los retardantes de llama se utilizan en pr\u00e1cticamente todo: textiles, muebles tapizados, la mayor\u00eda de los colchones, aparatos electr\u00f3nicos, etc. Es imposible mantenerse a salvo, sobre todo cuando su etiquetado no es obligatorio por ley. Sin embargo, hay algunos consejos que pueden ayudarle a reducir sus efectos.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Limpie su casa con una mopa h\u00fameda o utilice una aspiradora HEPA.
